My Once in a lifetime!!
I am writing this tribute to Betty with a few tears, as I listen to music on her memorial site that I know she would love. Riba and the Neville Bros (Great choice Liz). She became a VERY close "once in a lifetime friend" which were the very words she used to describe what we have together. No one has ever flattered me in such a way and I am sure her words are also "once in a lifetime for me" and I will always love her in a very special way for that. If I could have one wish right now it would be to have her back for a day.... but I know it would not ne enough!!
I will never forget the times when I did things that pissed her off... only one person could give me that look (I know you all know it). I remember a robust argument with her about the meaning of the word Sallow, which she thought meant dark skinned (swarthy), I said no, I thought it meant yellowish or pale. She was so adament that she was right that she decided to read the definition from the dictionary to me over the phone... her voice tailed off a bit as my definition became the right one. It was the only debate I ever won with her!! She has a very special way of telling me off!! I am sitting here thinking of the first time I met her, taking her and Liz to a function at Winton House in Gifford... I knew then that I had met a very special friend. We had a blast and enjoyed it.
I ran my first 10k for her last weekend (thanks if you sponsored me) I completed the race in 42.22 ( a Personal best). I knew she was with me and we spoke a couple of times on the way round the course... sadly all she could say to me was get a bend on Peacock... you've got a race to finish in my honour and you'd better raise a lot of cash for Cancer Research!! Well as it happens we raised £400 at short notice. Another race at the end of the month and I look forward to running once again with my "once in a lifetime friend" Betty Pender. Love and miss You.
